I think it was Joseph Epstein who said an essay was taking a line out for a walk. @andrewbertaina.bsky.social’s collection fits that so well, meandering from thought to thought in a compelling way.

#2 of 2025

I picked it up a few years ago after hearing it mentioned on a podcast. Sat in my shelves until the new puppy decided to chew on the corner. Read a story a day and then finished it up all at once.

Chicago is always a special city.

First book of 2025. Still reading a short story a day but haven’t finished a full collection yet

Following the example of @aaronburch.bsky.social and reading a short story per day. Figured I’d start with here.

#33 - Slouching Towards Los Angeles

Mythologies are powerful, especially the combination of Joan Didion and Los Angeles. Lives were changed because of their belief, some in the collection viewed this positively while others weren’t quite as sure.

#32 - Melt With Me

@paulcrenstorm.bsky.social’s latest collection took me back to the 80’s and the Cold War along with youth group bus rides, lurching in the dark, looking out the windows. So many thoughts and reminders of our youth when things seemed easier and yet more difficult.

#31 - Best American Essays 2023

I realize I’m late to this as the next collection is just about released. @alexanderchee.bsky.social put together a collection working thru our health, both mental and physical as well as living on the edges of society. Really enjoyed the breadth of these.

#30 - Where The Stress Falls

I haven’t read many essays by Susan Sontag before this. They weren’t always easy but I worked thru them. Criticism can sometimes take extra effort when you aren’t familiar with the subject.

I fought with this book the entire time I read it. I found the narrator much too passive, much too ‘something’ which just didn’t click. Of course once I finished and looked back thru the lens of the complete book, I could see all that was accomplished.

First time I’ve read Lauren Groff and I remembered how many liked this collection. It was interesting how a place is a constant character, a permanent part of the stories.

There was a sense to me though of similarities between the focal points of the stories.

#26 and #27

The definition of the essay is slippery. It ranges from reporting intermixed with personal narrative to the much more personal thoughts and feelings, trying to include the universal ideas.
