This is not necessarily true. It depends a lot on who owns such "not free" thing and whether they plan to generate value, or merely extract it and give it to some shareholders whose interest is only in the bottom line.

Abundance thought us different. Which led to selfishness, complacency, apathy, before we descend into dependence again. This was beautifully thought out by historian Alexander Tytler. I would argue it's no longer a 200-year cycle though - it all moves much more quickly.
