I'm slightly at a loss to imagine how Michelangelo managed to trace anything in the absence of any tech that would have allowed it. Vermeer probably used a camera obscura if that's what you mean by tracing.

Well, I've never traced a thing in my life but use the time honoured observation and measurement technique. References are fine but to look at. I suspect you are trolling a little.

Oh it's definitely cheating, in the same way that using a model is cheating. Let's call out some of those old cheaters of the past: Leonardo, Michelangelo, Caravaggio.
