I would recommend searching for deadlocking tutorials on YouTube if you want to really understand the structure. It is highly dependent on the texture of the hair, how large the locs are, and how long since they've been tightened.

When they are freshly tightened, you can see a lot of scalp.

Dreadlocks that have been, properly locked are generally uniform cylinders(locs) to just above the scalp, then they spread out in a square to the follicle. If it hasn't been tightened in a while, then the hair growing near the scalp starts to curl again, which hides the scalp more.
