At 16, Stephen Tainter volunteered in the Revolutionary War, serving as a drummer, joining just in time to endure the winter of 1776-1777 at Morristown, NJ. He spent the better part of 8 years in service, all before his 24th birthday.

#DidYouKnow that balloons were used during the Civil War to conduct surveillance? The balloons held around 4 to 5 men and a telegraph machine; they allowed military leaders to study the terrain and watch for incoming armies.
