Keeping the Shakespeare study thing in mind, this seems like maybe some evidence of the blurry line between Melville and Ishmael as narrators. If we read the stage directions and monologues as Ishmael/Melville writing the Tragedy of the Pequod, the structure seems a little less random.

We already know from Cetology that he makes up "facts" that suit his personal view of the world. This should tell us that his similar taxonomy of the three levels of officer (captain, mates, harpooners) and his descriptions of the people in these posts are similarly vibes-based.

I can't stop thinking about them. Because of how this reading is broken up, we also got The Mast Head today, in which Ishmael basically tells us he spends the entire time daydreaming. I don't think these are POV changes at all- this is Ishmael imagining their interior monologues.
