Public health & feminist demography | Reproductive coercion and autonomy | What we measure & why | Assistant Professor @ UW Madison | She/her | Views my own
In this analysis, we look at contraceptive use dynamics across 55 countries using DHS data.

We pay special attention to young people and the way that their contraceptive use patterns differ from those of older women.

Use, discontinuation, and method mix all really differ!

Every once in while I'm reminded that this dystopian Disney short on population control from 1968 exists

There's lots I love about this paper, but one thing I hope people will especially appreciate is the Venn diagram in Figure 1.

We use this figure to try to tease apart the points of ideological overlap and divergence between different camps in the family planning field

Reading an article by Alan Guttmacher (yes, that Guttmacher) where he lists the four possible indications for sterilization:

"First of all, eugenic; second, therapeutic; third, socio-economic; and fourth, population control."

Whoopsie...

Will you please spare a thought for this poor dog? He has nothing soft to sleep on :(

I truly don’t understand what people think pointing out the hypocrisy is going to do.

They are hypocrites and they don’t care!

We need a new rhetorical move!

I’ll be eager to see what your research says & I’m fully convinced that femicide is an important public health/political issue!

This isn’t my specific area of expertise so maybe I’m missing something, but it looks like the CDC attributed 2% of MM to homicide in 2020?

Sky-high CO2 and absolutely sweltering temps on my @Delta flight

This isn’t during boarding or deplaning — we’re at cruising altitude!

What’s up with the air quality, @Delta?

As you can see here in the (tentative! not yet finalized!) revisions to Figure 3 in the paper, demand-side unmet need continues to account for the majority of unmet need across countries, but the results are a bit less overwhelming than we originally reported

I’m at a conference today at the Gates Foundation and there are ~200 of us in this room

Looks like excellent air quality is possible even in crowded indoor spaces when there’s the resources and desire to protect the health of the occupants

Exciting news! Please share widely!

The Health Disparities Research Scholars T32 grant @UWMadison was just refunded by the NIH & is recruiting for up to 4 new postdocs for the fall

This was a WONDERFUL postdoc for me & I'm happy to answer any...

Am I the only person who reads "ScholarOne" like "scholar-oney" (rhymes with baloney)???
November 12, 2024 at 5:32 AM
Another day, another crazy high co2 reading in the session room at #PAA2023

I hope the wonderful folks @PopAssocAmerica are taking note and working to improve indoor air quality for future conferences
November 12, 2024 at 5:32 AM
So glad to be at #PAA2023 but concerned to see high CO2 levels in the session rooms

Would love to see a greater emphasis on ventilation and indoor air quality to help keep us all safe

I’ll also be presenting! I use data from @PM4Action to explore facility-level barriers to implant removal in six African countries.

Turns out a lot of faculties can put them in but far fewer can take them out!
November 12, 2024 at 6:04 AM
And Stephanie Chung rounds thing so out looking at the ways that providers (mis)deploy medical contraindications to create barriers to contraceptive choice.

Saturday morning at 10:30, session 239!
