Largely, that meant Black, Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQI+, and/or disabled kids. Do we fear naming them because of our own hang-ups on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, ability, poverty? We need to ‘get out of the way,’ centre children’s identities to improve their Communities of Care.

Do we ‘lose’ something important when we shift from ‘specific’ to academic or legal terminology? In a past W2A project, we learned to ‘name’ who we meant by ‘marginalized’ children.

As a duty bearer, I am committed to ensuring communities of care for children are sustainable and outlive service providers. This requires safe spaces where children can discover their identity, their views and preferences and be children.

As a lawyer who represents children at Justice for Children and Youth, I see the ongoing exclusion children face and that children remain an equity seeking group facing marginalization.

For youth in the Atlantic provinces, they spoke about a lack of support and connection with their community. Without a sense of belonging, inclusion and care, they cannot thrive. Without listening, there is no knowing.

Listening to youth is one of the most significant rights because it allows for other rights to be activated. Without listening, there is little understanding of what young people are experiencing in their lives or what they need.
