The purpose of cash bail is to ensure that the defendant returns to court. Setting high bail values to prevent release puts a cash price on freedom. If someone is too dangerous to be released, bail should instead be denied entirely.

Our justice system should focus on restoring victims whenever possible, reserving incarceration for the most egregious cases where there is no other way to dissuade someone from harming another. Property crimes, in particular, should focus on restitution.
