16. it's okay. i couldn't sleep anyway - minsung
A soft knock at the door rouses Minho from sleep. The dorm is almost entirely empty: they’d all been for a late post-practice dinner and most of the members had chosen to stay out a bit longer to blow off some steam. Minho, though, had felt his social battery drain rapidly over the course of the night and opted to leave early, seeking the solitude of his bed. He hadn’t been the only one. The knock doesn't come again, but the door creaks open anyway, slowly and carefully, as if the person on the other side is afraid to disturb him but compelled to do so anyway. “Hyung?” Jisung’s voice is small. The day’s hectic energy had gotten to him, too, fading his typical bravado around the edges and dimming his brightness to a single flame on a candle that’s been burning for too long. Minho twitches back the curtain of his bunk, squinting against the slash of light spilling in from the hallway and the vague shape peering in. “Jisungie?” Taking that as permission, Jisung enters the room fully and quietly closes the door behind him but stays rooted to the spot. Minho can hear his hands rustling in the fabric of his shirt and feels a pang of empathy. He and Jisung are similarly introverted: they had both tired of the social activity around the same time, sharing a look that was quickly followed by a brushing of fingers under the table. A signal: //are you done, too?// It’s no wonder the two of them had gravitated towards each other so quickly. They orbited the same star, trajectories aligned. Minho flicks on the reading light attached to the side of his bed to help guide the other boy and pulls the curtain open a little more in a wordless invitation. He shifts over, making room, and yanks the covers aside enough for Jisung to climb in. Hesitation gone, Jisung does so. The light is turned off. It’s not the first time one of them has found the other in the dark. Minho had done it first, seeking comfort the night he had been up on the elimination show chopping block. Jisung had done it next, unable to stop his spiraling anxious thoughts after a nightmare and needing Minho’s soothing presence. Sometimes there hadn't been a triggering moment at all. The companionship had become a lifeline for them both as they navigated this terrifying, thrilling new journey together. There was an understanding there, in the silent space they shared, that didn’t need words. Jisung settles his head under Minho’s chin as grounding arms wrap around him. He tucks his own arms between their bodies, close against his chest, and lets out a deep sigh in an attempt to let go of the long day and its mounting pressures that made his mind spin. He listens to Minho’s steady heartbeat and wills his own to match the rhythm, bring him back into his body. "I'm sorry for waking you," he says quietly, after a while. Minho moves slightly, his mouth brushing the top of Jisung’s head. "It's okay," he mumbles. "I couldn't sleep anyway." "Liar," Jisung chides softly, his words muffled against Minho's chest. Minho smiles into his hair then, and Jisung could’ve sworn he felt the lightest of kisses, a secret promise made and shared in the dark.

The thing about having anxiety problems, is, when you think there's a work issue, you become part of that issue. I mean, I saw some awkward things about my stability, and the ghost of being unemployed feels like... huge
