We call ourselves vegans because we avoid the needless exploitation of sentient beings as far as is practicable and reasonable. Veganism isn't strictly concerned with diet. Nor is it an exercise in perfectionism.

Vegans are doing just fine. There's millions of us including athletes. So as far as substitutes go, there's no need for people who have access to a grocery store to demand an animal to be killed for them to eat. It's not a difficult choice to pick something else. You move your hand and pick it up.

Even on small farms they forcibly impregnate cows and send them to slaughter. How else do you think they lactate milk, how long do you think they're going to feed a cow? For all 24+ years of their lives when they don't produce milk? How many babies do you think it's okay to steal? How many to rape?
