This poem explores the tension between outward expression and inner suffering—how beauty, when performed, often masks pain that goes unseen and unacknowledged. The bird becomes a figure for those of us who appear radiant, talented, or “strong,” even as we carry private burdens through silent nights.

This poem is a meditation on restless ambition and the fear that often shadows it. We are drawn to distant promises—“the slightest rumor of gold”—and set out with resolve, only to retreat when challenge or discomfort arises. Pursuit not out of desire for freedom, but out of avoidance.
