I spin in the grease for rugs, but for normal yarn I scour it first. But sheepies can be dirty little devils and it takes a few goes just to get the dust, mud, and poop out before tackling the grease! I tend to buy fleece from local small holders and most don't use the chalk markers.

Not an and eager, that's a rapid. The babies are speckled to camouflage them in the forests where they live.
