This being in London has given extra fuel for Scorched Isle though. Magic/magick is one way people have developed to try to cope and the results are... mixed. Bemusing sometimes. Sometimes a scam. Because sometimes some will add extra fluff to make a few coins.

I found the Chaos magick book I had once worked from courtesy of Internet Archive and looking through, I think it's one of the more 'practical' insofar as any of these things can be called, works to work from. Conversely I tried reading Golden Dawn and my head was spinning XD

My dad got me into it but he was the sort to try everything to get a result and if it didn't work, it was ditched for something else. Hence it felt very wishy-washy. I almost wonder if he was doing the magic equivalent of wishing on a star.

On the other hand, I found Chaos magick interesting.
