I sit outside every night and a stray shows up for some food. We’ve gotten all the way to head rubs, neck scratches, and twice there has been “I’m just gonna squeeze in here under your arm and take a little nappy nap.” But haven’t made it to any hand position that would allow me to lift her/him.

You can’t expect then to risk getting hurt!
