I put one forward the week after he announced his nonsense. Instead of sending Sefcovic to Washington, he should have gone to Bejing, Tokyo, Ottawa, Mexico, Canbarra, Wellington and London. A coordinated response with just some of these would have resulted in the bond market forcing trump back.

The old transatlantisist ruin Europes future by not allowing reorientation and finally letting Europe decouple from the US. We need the shock of no deal or at least that hard of a bargain that neither Trump nor we have any illusions of European vassalism.

Nothing will change that until Trump leaves power at the earliest.

The problem was and still is missing closed rows in the EU. GER, ITA and Eastern Europe made walking away basically impossible. They still think pf the US as a partner and not an enemy. Thats the core of the problem. 2/3

They were also totally different in the way that Barnier had a strong mandate and held a hard bargain. Nothing more I expect from EU now.

As if article 5 is anymore believable today than it was yesterday or would have been without a deal today. The trust was gone the moment Trump took power. 1/3

The capability to reflect that if we were half as willing to compromises towards China as we were willing to bend over towards the US, this would have been a whole different world, seems not to be part of the skillset of Sefcovic.

That’s the biggest mistake. Our position should at least have been a commitment to the middle, between the US and China, if not pivoting towards China. The old transatlantisist ruin Europes future by clinging to the 1990s and not striking new partnerships.

Everything that might kill this atrocity of a capitulation is a good thing.
Every member state is to blame for the weak outcome, not the French alone. We did it so well with the Brexit negotiations and Barnier and needed the same here.

This capitulation opens the door to the right as well…

US-EU Trade Deal✅
US-Europe Nato 5% defence ✅
Hard not to see Trump as power playing Europeans into total submission ie protection racket:
EU to buy more american hydrocarbons, open up their protected industries, buy more US weapons, and do more FDI in US.

China should block all rare earths to Europe as VDL only understands pressure.

It’s so utterly stupid. The Chinese showed us how to do it and the EUCO fumbled it so hard. What’s the upsite for the EU? That we can stay fossil together with the US until in five years reality of climate change, new partnerships and technoligy dawns? This was the moment to decouple from the US.
