Rescued greyhound, fostered by Northumberland Greyhound Rescue and now in my forever home on the north-east coast.
And from when his nails grew back. In the last one, that's how they stayed - looked normal, but were pretty much hollow, with no quick.

We didn't do it as Fin was super sensitive about his paws when they were sore. I think you're right with the pad/cotton padding and bandage. I remember using a lot of socks as well! Some pics of the early days - very padded bandages!

Thanks! My other photo looks like I’m doing a T-Rex impression… 🤣

I'd just say that it gets a lot better once the first lot of nails have come off and regrown in!

With Fin, the nails dropping off at the start was a mix. Some required the vet, some we bandaged so they'd work out a bit looser and then the vet could give them a quick pull to remove them, and some he caught in his bedding and pulled off by himself as we'd find them just lying around.

At the start he was on gabapentin for pain and we tried pentoxyfylline but that gave him a really bad tummy so we ended up on oxytetracycline. I think it just has to run its course at the start.

So after a bit of a stressful start with SLO, we soon got onto a stage where the meds stopped, he was just having various vitamins (biotin/onychotin, vitamin b3 nicotimadie/niacinamide, vitamin E and fish oil), with some nail grinding and he didn't have any other problems.

Yep. The blood supply to the nail dies off so at first it's quite painful - Fin was on a lot of painkillers and medications, and each nail was a bit traumatic! But then they grow in brittle and flakey and just drop off without the hound noticing. Dead easy to grind when they're like that too.

...without him even noticing. And at that point, they weren't sore so we could grind them to keep them really short.

Fin *hated* his paws being touched to start with so we tried to avoid bandaging as much as possible and just kept a really close eye on him and stuck hands in the way to stop him licking. Once all the nails had dropped off, it was loads easier - after that, they just dropped off by themselves...

Finley was worst when the nail was loose and hanging on, so getting it removed was the biggest thing in stopping licking. That's often when we'd use bandages - to stop it flapping around and so he'd leave it alone till it worked loose. The quick was left alone as the nail just popped up.

Sorry - I can't access my messages as BlueSky doesn't believe I'm over 18, unless I add credit card info, face scans and all kinds of info that I don't trust them or their random third-party verification company with.

But if you post questions here, I'll happily answer what I can!

Yep! Finley had SLO. Happy to share any of our experiences with you. Let me know what questions you have. 🙂

Thanks! Humans have got a long lead somewhere. My mum actually let me off for a quick off-lead run on the beach yesterday and I was perfectly well behaved. 😇 Will definitely use a long lead if there are sheep in the nearby fields though!
