June.
Late because life has been pretty gruelling.
It was a fine reading month though. What would I do without the books…

My bad photos of my friend Katherine's stunning print which is now framed and hanging in my garden office.
I haven't yet been able to entice her over to BlueSky but you can find her on Instagram or here: katherineanteney.co.uk

The postman delivered this glorious item this morning and the 14-year-old and I are arguing over who gets first read.

May 2025 reading roundup (a few days late).
I spent the early part of the month sitting or lying down as I was recovering from major surgery. Does it show?
It was a stellar reading month, either way.

My last event of the week was pure magic - @harkaway.bsky.social & @philippesands.bsky.social discussing Karla’s Choice (and beyond). One for Hay Anytime, if you weren’t there.
Now we’re heading home with our bags of books and overtired kids. See you next year @hayfestival.bsky.social

Day 7 at @hayfestival.bsky.social and, as well as lots of 8-year-old-friendly events, we went to see Natasha Brown and Jonathan Coe talking to Stephanie Merritt about their new novels. One of those Hay events that fill you up with ideas and questions - magic stuff!

I’ve been coming here for 20 years and only just noticed this fabulous sign. Luckily I’ve never tried to drive an ox across Hay Bridge.

Halfway through the week and we already don’t want to go home.
We’ve had Natalie Haynes angering Zeus, Tom Holland taking filth, Naomi Alderman being brilliant about thinking…and endless trips to Bartram’s. Lots more to come.

I was lucky enough to read (inhale) @joleon.bsky.social's proof copy of this exceptional novel before purchasing my own special edition last night. There's not much I can say that the rave reviews haven't. Just believe the hype. @florenceknapp.bsky.social's The Names is perfection.

That's April done.
I had major surgery mid-month and thought I'd get through more books but apparently my recuperating self needed to binge watch a bunch of films, the first season of ER and the whole of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip 🤷

First time on public transport since major surgery 11 days ago, as we needed to collect my daughter’s glasses. It’s nice to see the creatives of Shoreditch are putting their talents to good use 💪🏼

There is every chance I'll be thinking about this play for the rest of my life. A masterpiece is correct. The woman sitting next to us had flown from Australia to see it and, after watching last night, that seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to do #theatre #theyears #londontheatre

March reading.
The more anxious I am, the more I read and the more I run.
Half of these were partially consumed via audio while getting the miles in.
It’s a rough time, globally and personally, but at least there are books.

Keith (the neighbour’s cat) chased a fox into our garden and then sauntered about while the fox ate bread we’d thrown out for the birds.
I can’t help feeling there’s a backstory I’m missing…

Trying not to watch the girls climbing because I’m a wuss. Instead, consoling myself in a grim world with tea, a tuna melt and a bleak East German love affair.

My February reading.
A good month, with the Sands and the Fallada feeling grimly relevant.
I finished Alone in Berlin yesterday lunchtime - a novel about courageous people standing up to bullies until the bitter end… 💔
