Apropos of nothing...

The Whitehead and Perry article quantitatively shows the effects on gender ideology in the US and @lenkabustikova.bsky.social and I trace how these ideologies become embedded in policy in less-than-democratic contexts.

Carissa (almost) single-handedly brought back theory-generating papers and changed preconceived assumptions about the linearity of democratization, religion and politics, origins of representative institutions, and so much more.

This is such a rich paper and would be a great addition to syllabi!

Just uploaded a new version of my Job Market paper ahead of the USC HPE workshop.

Comments, concerns, and inquiries welcome!

I look forward to answering any questions about how this does or does not relate to "current events".

Best decision I've made in a while was (hopefully) finishing fieldwork on my book project, The Liberal Origins of Fascism: The Politics of Access in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, at the

Just a diplomat (and Professor) from a deeply complicated and diverse country trying to convince an American diplomat that fascism is more than national socialism using evidence of the politician-in-question's past legislative behavior.

American diplomat dismisses professor. How'd that work out?

When studying "hate" (the famous -isms), it's important to understand the various causes and mechanisms that drive empirically similar (or even identical) outcomes in behaviour.

Just getting ready for the Job Market, so I uploaded a new working paper to my website (www.lotemhalevy.com/research.html), along with some other goodies.

The paper should be available on SSRN shortly!

Interesting new article that fits nicely within "The Building Blocs" research agenda (t.ly/us7kj), which we recently contributed to: t.ly/Dg6zK

We, as scholars of Europe, can learn from scholars of MENA, SE Asia, etc, who have long emphasized the role of civil society for party competition.

I just re-read Rueschemeyer et al. (1992, 13-26). Although old, this section is good at outlining the different approaches to the study of development and democracy.

Useful for scholars who integrate historically accurate quantitative analysis with CHA. (Would put on a grad syllabus on democracy.)

Folks on the (dire) job market (w a connection to the UK), make sure you check out the eligibility criteria on some external grants for early-career researchers.

These are great options for early-career researchers looking to fund their own research!

Academia is equally cruel and charmed because you meet the coolest people and then their career whisks them away forever (or for a few months).

Feeling blessed that @excinequality.bsky.social brought the ever-easy-to-laugh-with @na-wehl.bsky.social into my work-life "balance".

I know I'm preaching to the choir here but I went in to the library to get a political science book on the politics of the secret ballot that was misclassified in the history section and placed next to this book I didn't know I needed.

Life (the library) is magic sometimes.

We sitatuate the concept in comparison to Prejudicial Illiberalism and Reactionary Illiberalism as ideal types while differentiating Confessional Illiberalism from other "-isms" such as #populism, #fascism, #authoritarianism, and #nationalism. 4/5

My friend @ayeletc.bsky.social won a Horowitz Foundation Social Policy Grant for her dissertation work on Saving Regimes and Financial Citizenship.

Congratulate and follow her for more exciting work in the intersection of social policy, socio-legal studies and good ol' comparative politics.

Thank you @ashartnett.bsky.social for the visit and @tinepaulsen.bsky.social for showing us around Zurich after a week of writing. 💜

It's really hard to study a phenomenon, especially across administrative regimes, when it's not widely recognized by said regime.

🚨🚨 Accepted yesterday! 🚨🚨

@lenkabustikova.bsky.social and I introduce the concept of "Confessional Illiberalism" and distinguish it from two other forms of illiberalism, reactionary and prejudicial illiberalism.

We also compare the concept to other '-isms' to tidy the backsliding literature.

Parties, not factions, in the Kingdom of Hungary and where they originated: Parliament or civil society.

4-ish years of data collection and creation plus four lines of code, and I can breathe. Small deal for everyone but me because it's one of the datasets I need for my working papers/book project.
