Seniority is shifting from knowing answers to knowing which questions matter.

Juniors bring speed. Seniors bring understanding.

Our responsibility? Teach how to learn when the machine knows syntax but not meaning.

"What happens if two users register with the same email at the same time?"

A junior showed me AI-generated code. It worked. But he hadn't thought about race conditions, idempotency, failure modes.

The LLM gave him code but didn't teach him to ask hard questions.

But there's a path forward.

Three patterns for rethinking learning:

- Tri-programming: Junior + AI + Senior
- Teaching prompt crafting and critical code reading
- Guided co-creation: AI scaffolds, humans master architecture

The new apprenticeship is about interrogation.

The uncomfortable truth: entry-level work is vanishing.

Not because we don't need developers, but because we don't know how to evaluate someone who's never built the basics from scratch.

The work that used to prove you could code has been automated away.

We haven't figured out what replaces it.

The lesson: co-author with LLMs, don't delegate to them.

Treat them like brilliant, fast, occasionally delusional junior teammates.

Ask clearly. Review ruthlessly. Stay curious.

Because comprehension, not generation, is still the craft.

But here's the dark side we don't talk about enough: overtrust.

A team shipped "secure" auth code. Clean structure. Tests passed. Beautiful.

Three months later: passwords were encrypted, not hashed. Every password in their DB could be decrypted.

Overtrust through plausibility is REAL.

Three big shifts:
Syntax recall → Intent articulation
We've moved from "how do I write this?" to "what do I actually need?"
Implementation → Orchestration
You're not a builder anymore. You're a conductor.
Writing code → Curating systems
Maintaining code you didn't entirely write is the new normal.

Fixed, many thanks!
The big is done in @11ty.dev, backed in GitHub, and I messed up my last commit. Fixed now 😅
