3/3 Just because a troop can't refuse the order does not hold them harmless. There are other things they can do. Cop the attitude "We are here to help you, the demonstrator, express their constitutionally protected free speech!". After all, that is the oath you took. Then, do it!

2/3 Of course, Kent State was before a vindictive ignoramus lied his way into the White House. No. You can't hold the troop responsible for that decision. If Congress and the Generals are too intimidated to make the call, it's certainly not the troopers' call to make.

1/3 Refuse the order to "keep the peace in an American city"? I had that thought once. Just after Kent State, I asked myself, "Would I have refused?" Today, I ask myself what if I had to and did refuse? This comfortable retirement I'm living today would not have happened.
