I saw this interesting tree today at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino, California. It's a Ombu tree.

Sign which reads: OMBU TREE On the grassy pampas of Argentina, Ombu trees are usually scattered many miles apart and are often the only trees to be seen. The native cowboys (gaucho) have long used them as shelters and landmarks. Under the seasonally dry conditions in habitat ombu trees form a massive base that stores water for use during drought periods. This ombu tree was planted here in 1914.

I saw this sign at the LA County Natural History Museum a couple of days ago.
