PhD researcher. Thresholds for good status in marine ecosystem management. Bangor School of Ocean Sciences, CDT SuMMeR. Marine policy, ecosystem assessment, interdisciplinary research.
Reflecting on a busy but exciting two weeks at @icesmarine.bsky.social in CPH focused on estimating quality thresholds for good status of benthic ecosystems (Seafloor Integrity). One of the best parts of my PhD is getting to collaborate and discuss ideas with others - esp. over good food

(Not intentionally) but on this #earthday I presented my PhD work at my first webinar series. We had a great turnout and some interesting questions around the application of methods for estimating thresholds and the use of reference conditions. Thanks to the #SMMR organiser team for having me on 🌍

Saw my first (tiny) adder this weekend! Also not happy with me

CDT SuMMeR (sustainable management of marine resources) symposium - ended with a project synergy/ collab session amongst PhD students. Developing discussion groups around key PhD themes - my theme/ q of interest: what does ‘restored’ look like for different habitats? 🤔🌱

We had a great keynote from @dansmale1.bsky.social on all the work him and his lab have done looking at the ecological and social impacts of marine heatwaves and the implications for management

Busy first day at the CDT SuMMeR symposium in Bristol, I chaired the first session and presented my work on estimating thresholds for good status using reference conditions for plankton, seagrass, reef fish, and benthic indicators - lots of positive feedback and discussion

Great talk from @aquadan1.bsky.social on her CDT SuMMeR PhD looking at the elasmobranchs in the UK using interdisciplinary approaches - as endorsed by jaws himself @sosbangor.bsky.social

Beautiful morning in the mountains in north wales, still a lot of sliding around near the top for me though 🤔

Great talk from Marianna last week on using images from #bio-logging to understand more about #marine species behaviours, and even use for marine monitoring purposes. Plus always cool to see marine predators in action 🐧 @oceanandice.bsky.social

Sometimes we also smile at #WGFBIT, mostly after the statiscal models are complete 💪 thanks to IFREMER and the FBIT team for such an enjoyable and productive week. Lots of progress on developing quality thresholds for GES / good status assessments

Enjoyed presenting my work on estimating thresholds for good status at @icesmarine.bsky.social WGFBIT today in IFREMER, Nantes - we looked at thresholds across benthos community + species, tropical reef fish, seagrass shoot density, and plankton lifeform reference conditions 🦀🐠🌱🪼

Benthic grab sample demo for the students brought up some sandy mud? Or muddy sand? then they were able to see the stratification here in the water column using the CTD readings #bangor #oceansciences

Day 2 on the RV Prince Madog sampling with marine biology undergrads, looks like the clouds might win today #bangor #oceansciences
November 10, 2024 at 9:00 AM
And my first time seeing #dolphins off the RV Prince Madog! Perhaps because I wasn’t on the night shift this time 💪 #bangor #oceansciences

Today the marine bio undergrads used the CTD for chlorophyll and SPM samples, towed net for a plankton sample, and had a go at using the secchi disk for a turbidity measurement #bangoruni #oceansciences

The grey cloud parted for us as we left the Menai strait this morning, and we have sunshine for our day of oceanographic sampling with 2nd yr undergrads #bangor #oceansciences

Great talk on ecological #tippingpoints yesterday from Prof Simon Willcock. It seems that scale is quite important for identifying Turing vs Classic fold tipping points in ecological systems but knowing what is the appropriate scale ecological unit to look at is another question #marine #thresholds

What a morning here in Oban! Blue skies and a flat calm sea #Challenger2024
September 4, 2024 at 7:50 AM
Finished the day at #Challenger2024 with a poster session, Scottish choir performance 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and to top it all off when we got outside it had stopped raining for the (almost) sunset
September 3, 2024 at 8:49 PM
Presented my work on estimating thresholds for good status in ecosystem assessments today at #Challenger2024 in Oban 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. Great audience, sandwiched in between some other fascinating talks across all sorts of disciplines and no microphone to forget to speak into 🙏

In a wet and windy Oban this week for #Challenger2024 conference, looking forward to presenting my work later on setting thresholds for good status

Thresholds (in the context of my PhD) are values that distinguish between 'good' and 'bad' ecosystem states
January 18, 2024 at 2:21 PM
Enjoyed presenting my work on setting ecological thresholds for 'good' status at the fisheries conservation and sustainability conference at Heriot Watt, Edinburgh last week. Looking forward to joining again next year.
