I understand your point and maybe theirs (having not seen it). At least a subway route can be something "familiar" - routine - you could(?) see the same people. Commute chat.

This can happen on planes, too, but way less likely.

The stress ratio on flights is significantly higher than subways.

They're purposefully picking people who are below them in the power dynamic.

And further - my point still stands. Public airlines are, objectively, not third places.

Flying isn't a "third place" - it's a necessary means to an end.
I don't routinely fly public airlines as a hobby, local hall, pub, etc. I fly to get somewhere.
