Girlfriend Material by Katia Rose Book 3 of 2025 Rating: ⭐️⭐️💫 out of 5 Publication Date: 2022 Genre(s): Romance / RomCom Pages: 356 This was an… okay RomCom about Allison and Kate, two best friends and third year costume design students at a Fine Arts school in Montreal who fall in love when Allison asks Kate for dating tips. The Good: The setting! The story takes place in a fine arts university costuming department, which is the kind of place I’ve never given a thought to in my life. And I love a good pun in the title so Girlfriend Material really worked there. Also, the character of Allison is smart and sweet and I grew attached to her as the book went on. The Bad: This is supposed to be a RomCom but the Comedy was nowhere to be found. There were a few scenes clearly intended to be funny that either fell flat or were just cringey. Also, Kate really has way too much baggage that she is still carrying and has been dealing with in toxic ways and I don’t really buy that she would have been healed as quickly as it appears in the book. The Spicy: Not that spicy and kept getting interrupted?! Which I know can happen but just didn’t work for me here.

Loretta holds up a copy of The Guncle by Steven Rowley Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5 Publication Date: 2021 Genre(s): Contemporary Fiction, LGBTQ Fiction Pages: 326 The Guncle is a moving story told with wit and heart. Patrick is a gay former television star in his early 40s who has entered a period of self-imposed isolation following a loss in his past. He’s forced to be shaken out of his complacency because his onetime best friend—who he has grown distant from due to his grief and the diverging paths of their lives—has died, and he is asked to take care of her kids for a summer. (In part because the best friend ended up marrying his brother, leading to the delightful epithet BrotherFucker.) Hilarity and pathos ensues. I love Rowley’s writing. It’s sharp and straightforward, with a lot of wit and A LOT of heart. He clearly has a deep understanding of grief and I found many passages touching. Listening to this on audio (well read by the author himself), I teared up on the subway more than once. Patrick and Grant and Maisie and Greg and Sara and even Clara will stick around in my head for a while yet.

Book 1 of 2025, finished a couple weeks ago, the Booker Prize winning novel The English Patient. I gave it 4/5 stars. #BookSky 💙📚🖋️ #LitFic #TheEnglishPatient
Snowy Background and Loretta holds up her copy of The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje This novel is like a dream, or perhaps more accurately a trance. The reader is led on a journey that shifts rapidly between timelines and perspectives, constantly questioning what happened, and to whom, and when. In the end many—but not all—questions raised are answered. The prose is beautiful and makes you feel the trauma, grief and love of the characters. That said, of the four characters, I found myself very engaged by two (the titular English Patient and Caravaggio), and only moderately engaged by the other two (Kip and Hana, depending on the action on the page). So while I very much enjoyed this book and can see its greatness, I can’t quite say that I loved it.
