HMRC seems content for the moment to allow self declaration with software to provide a confidence score (instead of, eg, banning cash and instrumenting every transaction) so maybe there’s hope. I have written to my MP to push for an implementation with the minimal erosion of privacy. Please help.

Well, not actual paper any more than your tax return is paper. I agree that it will be the go-to option for the Sercos and Capitas of the world to get a fat contract and for civil servants to grab more data. It would be nice to think they could be talked out of it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No. What’s easier: adding telemetry to all vehicles to track their location and calculate mileage, or adding a couple of admin fields to the process of taxing a car, which you’re legally required to complete honestly, and a way of getting a receipt to deduct mileage used outside the UK?

Good point, well made. Add: get a declaration of mileage overseas stamped on departure from the UK and return to it.
