Out of Ohio's 88 counties, there are 50 that are considered "rural" by Census standards.

There are many ways to curb Medicaid spending, including a more robust safety net outside of healthcare.

The proposals being discussed on a federal level, however, are likely going to face very strong pushback, especially in states (like Ohio) that disproportionately benefit from the current FMAP.

HRSA's 2024 report on the primary care workforce highlights a projected shortage of 87,150 FTE primary care physicians by 2037. Rural areas rely heavily on NPs and PAs, w/many PAs interested in underserved areas. The U.S. needs 13,075 more physicians to eliminate shortages.

As of August 2024, Medicare enrollment reached 67.8 million, with 33.6 million in Original Medicare and 34.2 million in Medicare Advantage. Medicaid and CHIP had 72.3 million enrollees, with a 22% increase in applications from the previous year.
