That's funny. I never read Longyear but I always assumed ENEMY MINE was basically a science fiction pastiche of the 1968 John Boorman film HELL IN THE PACIFIC.

In the 80s were they still the acoustic type where you placed the phone's handset on the modem itself?

I bought this off a discount rack for <$5 and it's opened more packages than any dedicated box cutter or utility knife I own combined.
The DooHicKey by Night Ize, a small multi tool that attaches to a key ring with a carabiner clip, and serves as a bottle opener, ruler, flathead screwdriver, box cutter, and 3 small wrenches.
