Hammond Innes! There's a name I haven't heard for a while. Never read him but a copy of The Big Footprints was on a shelf of dad's books at home for a long time, next to Douglas Reeman novels and some Reader's Digest stuff. Maybe a Craig Thomas book or two.

Zenith - absolutely blew my mind as a kid. And it has the added benefit of watching Steve Yeowell's incredible development as an artist over the four books.

As a kid I always cheated with the “five finger bookmark” Ian Livingstone talked about and automatically won every combat, but I’ve gone back and replayed a lot of them as an adult and scrupulously obeyed every rule. Christ, but they’re hard.
