It's a super solid game and the easier modes are actually very forgiving. Try out the demo on steam, it gives a solid introduction to the mechanics.

The lighting and color makes your character go from "Get in the robot, Shinji" to "Become a robot, Shinji" then becoming Genos from one Punch Man.
