A monstrous bird-like creature standing on its hindlegs and screaming. The creature has violet wings with thick, osseous, blade-like dark pseudo-feathers with pulsating veins running through them. The creature's corvid beak opens unnaturally as a fanged maw, shining a bright light from inside the large throat. A bright violet aura is emitted from the creature's sound, like a soundwave or a halo. The creature sports a massive wishbone, and under its belly, multiple faces and vestigial arms grimace and claw around. The monster has a large, crostacean-like tail ending with a fan of black feathers. Beyond the creature there's a grey wasteland under blue-violet, iridescent skies. A huge, scarred and glabrous humanoid stands, clad in black, leathery bat wings from his back. The monster joins his long-clawed hands together and looks down with his fanged, scarred visage upon a man in the foreground, looking up to the monster from a cliff. Sword ladies! ⚔️🤺
A well-built woman stands in a fighting stance, a large sword in her hands pointed towards the observer. The blade has a rounded point, like an executioner's sword, and a few signs of wear. The woman wears a tight sleeveless shirt that doesn't cover her navel, combat bandages on her wrists and knuckles, and pants folded just below the knee. The woman sports a number of tattooed crosses on the right arm and left shoulder, and a horizontal scar across her face, passing over her nose. Her hair are in a chignon held together by a string and a couple sticks. Behind her, a massive rock wall stands vertically cleft in two, probably by her superhuman strike. A fan-made comic page of Hellboy meeting some Space Marines (from Warhammer 40k) of the Crimson Fists chapter. The space marine lights Hellboy's cigarette with his flamer while saying "An impressive power-fist you wield, sanctioned mutant. But your bolter seems... outdated." Hellboy answers "Uhh... thanks?" and the space marine gives him a gun and a piece of shoulder armor, saying "Our munitorum has allowed me to issue you with a protective pauldron, and I'll share my spare bolter with you." Hellboy takes it and asks "Bolter, huh. What's it fire?" The space marines assemble, and a dreadnought rises nearby as Hellboy dons the pauldron and wields the gun, while the space marine answers "Gyro-jet assisted armor-piercing explosive rounds!" Hellboy grins and comments "Now we're talking!" A colored excerpt of a comics page of an unnamed helldiver (from the eponymous game), laying wounded on a rain-soaked battlefield. An automaton devastator finds him, but the helldiver draws his sidearm, a heavy Senator revolver, and disables the machine with a few precise shots, before reaching for a medkit on a comrade's corpse. The helldiver injects the stimpack into his wounded abdomen, healing quickly enough to get up and address further enemies converging on his position.

The monk is immediately stopped at the door by the Rusalka, barring him entrance. The spirit tells him about the heroic sacrifice of the priest to save two souls, and of the love of a father for his son. The rusalka admits that she didn't imagine that a symbol of power capable of stopping the demon could have been pressed into a little magical vessel by chance (the horseshoe was similar to the sigil). The monk returns to civilization. The monk indulges in some musing in the final part of his letter to the provost, considering the nature of luck, of retribution against evil, and of bonds. Inside the cave, dirt has accumulated near the small pond. A massive tree has grown there: its shape is oddly similar to Pebble, showing a carving in its bark that matches the rope and horseshoe. Flowers bloom in the ground around the half-buried tools of the characters who died there: Joe's sword, Gabren's tool, and Helmut's straw hat.

Epilogue! Just 5 pages. It's more of an added ending, the players in the one-shot simply died then and there.
A picture of a rusty horseshoe. The page says "Epilogue". A man rides into the village. Unlike the beginning of the story, the scenery is lush with plants, trees, grass. The city seems lived in. The man continues on horse towards the Worming Woods, now a verdant forest. The horseman, a monk, sent to investigate the disappearance of Father Gabren, tells the ending in the form of a report to the provost of the church. He reaches the tree where Woodlaw was hanged - the rope is used and mangled bones lie around. The monk notices the half-open passage to the cave, and takes his holy book. The text boxes preludes to the fact that he saw something intense inside.

Woodlaw gazes at the opening to the deep cave, gun raised. Sounds of bones cracking and flesh ripped and munched resonates from the dark entrance. Then a voice, claiming to be Joe Flint, calls for him. Woodlaw realizes this is obviously some supernatural mimicry and immediately runs for his life. The demon, not too surprised, admits it was worth a try before hunting him down the tunnels, this time mimicking the bandit's claim that Joe would die. Looking through Woodlaw's point of view, we arrive at the entrance of the cave, but he's panting from his run and doesn't notice the hangman's noose that falls on him: his brother has finally ambushed him, and comes to mock him. Woodlaw tries to warn his brother and the henchmen of the monster inside, but his brother doesn't care, believing his warning to be an attempt to plead for mercy or to gain time, and orders his goons to hang him right then and there at the nearest tree. As he realizes he wanted his brother to suffer more, the demon emerges, and the three assassins look in horror as the monster claims once again to have been robbed of his fun, ready to prey on them too. The demon comes back into the main cave, commenting on the flesh of his latest victims, and turns to notice that Pebble is still there, as he was ordered to guard the body of Helmut. The monster moves towards the homunculus, mocking it, but something happens and the horseshoe shines in the puppet's chest, glowing as if incandescent. The demon, suddenly scared, cries and orders Pebble to stay away, but probably to deaf ears.

Gabren's last scream reaches the other cave, stirring Joe and Woodlaw from their brief respite. Joe yells his adoptive father figure's name and decides to go look for him, even in his wounded condition. Woodlaw, clearly scared for his own safety, forbids him from leaving, but Joe finally defies his orders, realizing the spoiled strictness of his employer. As Joe goes, Woodlaw whimpers, unaware that his brother and his henchmen are hearing that he's finally alone. The henchmen discuss what to do, but decide against attacking. Woodlaw's brother agrees that something down there is already doing their job for them, but says they'll wait for him to escape, and then ambush him. Joe wanders into the deep cave, calling Gabren and lamenting his shoulder wound, the spear's tip still lodged in. He realizes too late he hasn't brought a torch, but suddenly hears a faint voice, recognizing it as Gabren's. Joe wanders in complete darkness, following the voice he believes to be Gabren. As he laments the strange nature of this slippery cave, the voice reassures him: he just fell and yelled, his torch quenched. Once Joe has gone too deep, the voice reveals itself to be the demon, and the creature, perhaps accessing some preternatural knowledge, reminds Joe of his fear of heights from his childhood incident in a well, as he approaches for the kill from behind. Joe looks at the mangled rests of Gabren right before the demon reminds him of falling into a well as a child. Then the ground opens, not the ground but the demon's mouth, immensely large, like an abyss. Joe, unable to reach anywhere, falls into the maw yelling. Woodlaw hears the scream as he heard Gabren's minutes before.

Gabren finds the bony claws of the monster suddenly grasping him as well. He is prisoner, and the monster mocks him, ordering him not to scream until his demands are met. He seems to relish in the anticipation of the evil deed. Regaining some grit, Gabren tries to communicate and identify the creature. Not a spirit or a vengeful ghost, but a demon. But why under a holy site? The demon implies it was exactly because the site was meant to entrap him, but not forever. The demon tells his story to Gabren as flashbacks illustrate his words. We see the bandits finding the entrance to the holy caves in their escape from the law. In the main cave, they found the demon in a slug-like form, without its bony limbs, forced in place by multiple chains tied to the walls. The demon offered the bandits a deal in exchange for his freedom. Piles of bones are shown, dug up from graves to construct the demon's exoskeleton and fuel his evil powers. A fat noble is shown offering a bad of money, as the bandits brokered a deal with spiteful nobles that lost the Barony Wars on the demon's behalf. The last image shows the Rusalka, attacked and captured by the demon after she manifested physical form to investigate on the shores of the shrinking river. The demon claims he caged her with drowned men bones, gaining free rein on the land. Gabren realizes the demon created a monopoly on the region's water. The demon is not satisfied, though, and will soon betray even his allies and clients to spread further misery. He's disappointed by the death of the bandits, because he wanted to betray them himself and make them suffer. In exchange for this offense he perceives, he asks the priest to relinquish the claim of Cthon to the souls of his closest parishoners. We see Pebble, silently mourning his father Helmut, in the other cave, unaware of the stake of his soul. Gabren knows Helmut and Pebble are his responsability, but the demon says he will let Gabren go if he simply excommunicates them now. He suggests that this momentary safety will allow the priest to escape and assemble hunters and inquisitors to continue this pursuit, but Gabren immediately calls him on his bluff, recognizing the demon will not keep his word, as he said before about the bandits. As Gabren inevitably steels himself for the end, the demon finally grants him permission to scream.

I took some liberty in depicting the Rusalka as some non-hostile river spirit. I hope it doesn't detract too much from the story. Also warning for blue tits, and not of the aviary kind.

A creature clad in bones and seaweed smirks with many fanged mouths and yellowish eyes. The creature mocks the woman, who we now see is kept in a makeshift cage of bones and sticks, saying that people have died and tragedy is brewing. The monster calls her Rusalka, and claims that even though she sings, no one will be able to save her from his grasp. As Gabren descends into the second cavern, Woodlaw comments with Joe that the fact that multiple people hearing the same singing voice isn't just a sign of madness. However, he mentions, a singing voice in a place like this either is a sign of a inviolable sanctuary, or a trap. Gabren realizes it's the latter as he steps onto multiple skulls littering the flooded floors of the cavern. The area is large and it is completely filled with bones. As Gabren is dumbfounded by the magnitude of this secret grave, the Rusalka looks at him from the darkness and recognizes him as a priest of Chton. When he turns to her, seeing her caged, he recognizes she's a Rusalka, a river spirit. The spirit begs him to run, but he spends a moment to ask her how could she be trapped by mere bandits. As the toothy smile of the monster appears behind him in the dark, the Rusalka starts crying again, blaming herself for luring more to this place.

Gabren says the cave is a sacred site for the god Cthon, and a good place to attempt the rite. He searches for mud in the small pool, but it is mostly rock. However, if the water here is connected to the river's source, it should be possible to find another area with mud nearby. As he muses about, he looks down to another opening in the cave, descending further, and realizes he can hear the woman's song.

Gabren realizes Woodlaw isn't doing this out of generosity and cares nothing for the villages, and asks him to be honest. Woodlaw admits that his father, the former Marquis, is dead, poisoned by Woodlaw's brother, the cross-eyed hunchback from before. With no proof, Woodlaw couldn't imprison him. Fearing for more ambushes, Woodlaw left with his bodyguard, alerting the king's inquisition to a disease plaguing his estate and calling for a thorough purge, so as to leave nothing to his brother. Above the cave, his brother, evidently escaped from the purge, and now accompanied by the two hired thugs, listens in, promising to take vengeance for the trick. Pebble points at Helmut, alerting Gabren: the drunkard's wounds are actually deadly. Gabren rushes to his side, but Helmut admits he's already too far gone. He calls for pebble and confesses this is the right punishment for his sins. Gabren reassures him, but Helmut reveals the guilt of losing his son never abandoned him. As he asks for a final blessing, Helmut breathes his last. Woodlaw cares little for the death of Helmut, but Gabren ignores him, claiming he can still save the poor man. Joe looks on in disbelief, but Gabren confirms his claim: he'll raise Helmut's spirit in a homunculus' body, like he did many years before for his dead son, whose soul resides in Pebble.

Taking the lead, the other heroes enter the cave while they still have the element of surprise. The killed bandit falls on top of Gabren, while Joe charges, sword in hand. Woodlaw opens fire, and Helmut aimlessly throws horseshoes around, while Pebble looks on, emotionless. Joe cuts down one bandit just as the enemy pierces him with a spear. Woodlaw calls out to him as another bandit raises a dagger, ready to throw. Before he can finish the wounded bodyguard, Helmut charges and tackles him while yelling insults. Gabren tries to free himself, while Woodlaw aims a pistol at the two men fighting, but the brawl is intense and it's hard to aim. Helmut pummels and berates the enemy viciously like a drunken brawler, but the bandit grabs onto the scalding pot and throws it on Helmut's head, hitting him and spilling blood. As the bandit regains footing, threatening to kill Helmut with the dagger, Woodlaw simply ignores his threat and shoots him, commenting that using peasants as hostages is useless against him. Gabren looks on, astonished by the ruthless noble.

A cauldron lies, turned over, its sloppy contents spilled. The page says "Chapter Three - Mourning". Helmut fashions a makeshift torch from his shirt's sleeve and a bit of grog from his flask. The group follows Pebble in the tunnel, while Helmut admits to hearing a woman's faint song in the air, but no one else can hear it. As they reach a bifurcation, they follow the homunculus to the left path, unaware that the other way is marked with claw marks, bloody handprints and other scary signs in the dark. Gabren slowly awakens in a cave. One of the two bandits from before joined the rest of the group inside a small area. The cavern has a small water pool, light descending from above. Camping beds and a pot lie nearby. The bandit threatens Gabren, angry for his interference, and orders him to answer questions on the intruders. As they reach the cave where the bandits have taken Gabren, the heroes take out their torch are plan their attack. While they do, Pebble ignores them, holy book in hand, and enters the cave with no plan. The bandit interrogating Gabren mentions that he was almost against causing the drought, but before he can say further, he's struck in the head by the heavy book thrown by Pebble, and his neck fatally snaps.

Joe and Woodlaw find the hideout's entrance, and the body of a bandit under the rubble, but not Gabren's, and deduce he's been taken. Pebble is half-broken from the fall, but Helmut caringly takes time to fix it, tying one of his horseshoes and a length of rope on its body. As Joe pushes the stone door open, Woodlaw looks at him, sitting nearby without helping, as punishment for talking back to him during descent. Woodlaw reminds him of the discipline under war, and of the Barony Wars.

As Gimmen falls to the ground, Joe closes the distance and strikes him down. The other bandits are taken aback, and Woodlaw shoots one with his musket while he's got the advantage. The crossbow bandit takes aim at Woodlaw, but is struck in the head by a horseshoe tied to a rope. Helmut spins the rope, claimin he's still a good shot. Woodlaw turns to the priest to acknowledge his wisdom in bringing the drnkard, but realizes the magic made the cliff crumble and Gabren has fallen into the chasm. At the bottom of the slope, a couple bandits mount guard near a secret entrance between the rocks. One is pissing as he discusses the secrecy of the hideout with the other. They hear the rumble of the landslide, but one is buried and killed before he can move. When the other turns, it's too late. Helmut has affixed a rope at the top of the slope. Woodlaw climbs down first, followed by Joe, despite his fear of heights. As he descends, his headwear and long-haired wig fly away in the wind, revealing he's a bit balding. Woodlaw comments on it, but Joe, tense, tells him to shut up.
