I feel people often say "cheap" when they mean "efficient". Yes, they saved every penny they could on basically anything, because they needed to spend money on so many things. Doesn't mean it was cheap, just means it was less money than they might have liked to have, but that's just working in TV.

It's still cool to see an intact one, but most actually old ones (pre 1600) are either ruins or just a tower somewhere on a hill. The ones looking like you'd expect a castle to look are often fairly new (late 1700s up to early 1900s) and were built for show, so less interesting imo.
