A million different variations have been recorded by tons of people. This is one, by Mable Hillary, that I particularly enjoy. It was recorded for Canadian TV in 1966, just two years before the Supremes released their version.

Carr wrote a handful of distinct variations, the last was this, recorded in 1932 with the guitarist, Scrapper Blackwell. It is the first time the title was changed to the one that Sawyer and Wilson used for their Supremes song.

Lyrically, the song seems to be directly based on a series of songs written by Leroy Carr from earlier in the 20th Century. The first was Carr’s, “How Long, How Long Blues”, recorded in 1928. The Supremes title question is right there in the first line:

That bassline aside, the whole arrangement is brilliant. Written by Pam Sawyer and Frank Wilson, it was recorded in 1968 for the Love Child album. I’ve seen the production credited to Henry Cosby and Frank Wilson, but Love Child was the first Supremes album produced without...

I know I’ve posted this song before, but it is an all-time favorite. It’s a big deal among electric bass players because James Jamerson’s bassline is fucking phenomenal. Here is his isolated bass part:

...guitar, synth organ, drum machine). Her good friend, Sister Marimil Lobregat, did all the recording, engineering, and sound production.

O'Connor's voice is pretty amazing. The material sounds like twee pop from the early 80s, there's almost a Young Marble Giants vibe at times.
