Today we have a true horror: the 360 Red Ring of Death.

Seeing this glowing bastard staring back at you meant filled you with dread at the thought of forking out for another Xbox 360 (or more time spent on that damn Towel Trick).

Running on fumes here 😅

ZombiU - maybe not the best game on this list but it did some interesting stuff with the permadeath/survivor mechanics. Plus bonking zombies on the head with a cricket bat was pretty cool.

One of the few games to use the Wii U Gamepad well too.

Still Wakes The Deep is another knock-out game by The Chinese Room, and their scariest game to date.

A bit like our last pick, it feels a bit Lovecraftian in its story, which it tells incredibly well with horrific creatures pursuing you relentlessly down dark, dank corridors

Lovecraft + Fishing = Dredge

While not a scary game, the otherworldly creatures you drag up from the depths and the dangers lurking at night will definitely unsettle you.

Nearly forgot about The Evil Within 2!

We all agree it's better than the original, right
October 23, 2025 at 9:49 PM
Another great horror gem, this time in the point-and-click niche of the adventure genre.

A lonely, isolated setting with an unsettling story that makes good use of the environment.

Spooky European cyberpunk horror game? Yes please 😍
October 21, 2025 at 10:10 PM
15 mins of Outlast was enough for me. Just look at this guy. I dunno how anyone can play this.
October 21, 2025 at 10:10 PM
Does this count?

The splicers and Rapture itself were both quite unsettling so I'm gonna say that Bioshock counts.

Today's pick is Resident Evil 4 Remake.

Absolutely one of the best examples of a remake, it's unmistakably RE4 but with a ton of smart changes that make it infinitely more playable than the original is now.

Still not sure on Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2?

Got 1 minute and 10 seconds free?

We've got the video for you!

Today's Essential Horror Gem: Alien Isolation.

It's a scary Alien game. Do I need to say much more?
October 17, 2025 at 4:27 PM
The second and final Supermassive entry on the list, The Quarry is more teen slasher fun. A little more predictable than Until Dawn but still a laugh whether played alone or with friends helping make the decisions, and with some surprisingly tense moments too.
October 16, 2025 at 6:03 PM
Another spooky multiplayer game, Left 4 Dead is mostly balls-to-the-walls zombie action but there are creepy moments too.

Mainly when you hear the Witch crying in the distance and you just know one of the random idiot teammates is about to trigger her. Truly terrifying.

Now for something a little different, and one you can't say much about without spoiling.

Slay the Princess is a creepy and unsettling visual novel with a story and artwork that'll send chills up your spine.

Essential Horror Game 13: Phasmophobia!

Genuinely terrifying multiplayer ghost hunting that's somehow funny at the same time. You'll shit yourself when a poltergeist flings something at you but for your friends it'll be hilarious hearing your scream echo across the map.

Essential Horror Gems 12 is...

State of Decay

Not traditionally scary, but it's one of the best depictions of a zombie apocalypse and captures the desperation of managing a camp and scavenging for supplies while trying to keep quiet, avoid hordes and stay alive.

With the third game releasing yesterday it seemed fitting to make the original Little Nightmares our 11th Essential Horror Gem.

Exceptionally unnerving while still remaining playable for the more easily-scared, the story of Six and her journey through The Maw is creepy AF.

Essential Horror Gem No. 10 is an all-time classic. A game that makes it onto every list, and that every horror fan adores, it's 2008's Alone in the Dark.

Highlights include a taxi chase through a crumbling NYC, and looking down into your pockets to manage your inventory

Silent Hill f is yesterday's Essential Horror Gem!

Not gonna lie, I've not played it. Chris reviewed it though, and it's made me want to give it a go:

Paranormasight is essential spooky gaming, and perfect for those who scare easily as it's closer to "unsettling" than it is outright horror.

It's a great example of the adventure genre and does things you won't find in any other game while telling a compellingly creepy tale.

Essential Horror Game 7:

Doki Doki Literature Club

The less said about this one the better, rest assured it's very creepy though.
October 7, 2025 at 5:33 PM
Essential Horror Gem 6:

Resident Evil 7

Jack Baker is Resident Evil personified: creepy and camp in equal measure, he's terrifying while pursuing you and hilarious when he catches you.

The grungey, found-footage style is great and makes it unlike anything else in the series.
October 6, 2025 at 5:49 PM
Today's Essential Horror Game:

Until Dawn!

The best video game adaptation of the "dumb teens hunted by slasher" sub-genre, Until Dawn tells 3 equally interesting and interconnected stories wrapped up in adventure where all your choices matter. Perfect for Halloween 🎃
October 5, 2025 at 11:04 AM
Essential Horror Gem No. 4:

Friday the 13th: The Game 🪓

The best of the asymmetric multiplayer franchise games, Jason materialising in front of you and punching your head off never got old. Just a shame it's no longer playable 😭

Hopefully the Halloween game fills the gap🤞🏻
