Late afternoon chatters turn to buzzing in her ears, incessant and meaningless. She’s learned to tune them out, less she gets called out for eavesdropping. A gossip. A spy. A sly woman who’ll spill your secrets one way or another. It’s not who she is, but they never listen. Kou wraps her coat closer to herself, shivering in the November chill. She’s eager to get home and be tucked into bed. Maybe she could watch that documentary episode she’s been putting off too. She turns her gaze to some nearby buzzing. Two female students have their eyes on Kou, but they quickly turn when she looks at them. She can slightly hear their hushed voices. “Keep it down! We don’t want her listening!” Kou doesn’t have the energy to fight it anymore. She walks past the school gates in a hurry. Her head is always turned slightly downwards as she walks, careful not to look anyone in the eyes, nor listen in on them. Her senses are voluntarily shut out to the world. She has to if she wants those nasty rumours about her to stop. But she makes the mistake of peeking a quick glance at her reflection in the window. Kou stops suddenly, looking up. There’s a mannequin on the other side, showing off some formal yet chic clothing brand. But if she squints hard enough, she can see her. The dead eyes of someone who’s lost all hope, all desire, all strength. A shell of who she used to be. ’What a horrible look,’ she thinks, frowning at her pitiable self as she continues walking. Maybe, just maybe, she’ll hide under the covers and go to sleep instead.

Her reflection was smudged within the half-empty wine glass, distorted, the woman staring back was a stranger. The chatter and music around her dulled into white noise as she contained herself in her thoughts. This was suppose to be a joyous day. She was suppose to be happy, for the groom, for the bride. For the bride. Yet she felt no happiness in her heart, just a nagging pain that was constant, stinging her with every beat. She stopped feeling joy when the bride announced her engagement that fateful day. She chuckled, a bitter sound that bubbled in her throat as she stared at the wine glass. She remembered when her and the bride would stay up late at night, sipping wine and laughing like there was no tomorrow. They spilt gossip, shared secrets, promised to never drift apart no matter what happened. So much for that. She'd been forgotten. She was content with just standing there, drowning in her jealousy, but the bride's voice soon graced the room with her beautiful voice. May I have your attention please? The bride always had her attention. When she looked up to see the bride's radiant glow, all dressed in white like an angel, everything came to surface. The tears stung her eyes and cursed her skin as the bride began her speech, thanking everyone, her friends, her family, her husband. The bride couldn't be any happier. It should've been me, she thought, forcing a smile as she clapped at the end. Her tears of sorrow would forever be masked as tears of joy.
