We have several examples of things overwhelmingly popular in polls of public opinion, but the political system we have now has evolved past that. With regards to healthcare reform and gun control, both are widely popular but the Republican Party will always have enough power to stop it.

The destruction of the public education system... a major goal of the Republican Party.

In America, I suspect we would get even worse results if everyone voted.

Correct. We have a pattern of behavior from the Republican Party regarding Trump that goes back 9 years. I remember how we all thought Republicans would abandon him and he would lose because of the Access Hollywood tape. Here we are, multiple scandals later.

So was I. I learned to be kind to people.

Kids who have parents who bully/berate them... often seem to grow up to be bullies.

And the lesson Republicans seemed to have learned from that episode is to defend the indefensible and protect the party/president at all costs.
