The future only gets better when we stand up. We can spend all day only talking about how things should be or we can get to work making it happen
Wait till you learn about Lemmy's bean meme. Was mostly a few years ago, but people there still go crazy for beans

Started when someone made a post of just beans and then it got >7 thousand upvotes

I heard that lemmy will upvote anything. This is literally just a can of fucking beans - sh.itjust.works

It's worked before for a number of other movements. Above I also talk about how similar techniques got plant milk up charges to be removed in hundreds of chains (including big ones)

It's got risks of backfire, yes, but it definitely can work. Especially because of the later discussions it generates

Not the person you are replying to, but that one is mostly not true

www.snopes.com/fact-check/p...

Most of those kinds of viral claims about them turn out to be false. They are by no means free from issues, but their actual issues are generally much more boring and less exciting

Now hundreds of coffee chains have now all dropped their up chargers which is a good win to get people to switch to plant milks

See below for a list of all 355 including other big chains

For another instance, a number of people glued their hands to tables to protest Starbucks' non-dairy milk upcharge

It got a lot of people outraged, saying looks how stupid they are, but it actually worked. Viral videos / posts from it made people start talking about the issue which raised pressure
August 15, 2025 at 9:49 PM
The point is to get anger about [why do they care about or do silly thing] to raise awareness of [important thing]. It is strategic

Look how many people are now seeing an image in this thread which mentions issues with dairy farming because of it

A lot of groups do it because it works
August 15, 2025 at 9:49 PM
Maybe can try something along the line of this? Not sure if it's fun and snappy, but it's very memorable. Has stuck with me for a little while
August 13, 2025 at 4:55 PM
Just to clarify here, I am not saying the private groups will necessarily themselves become more accurate in estimations. Just more accurate by comparison
August 1, 2025 at 7:49 PM
There are some private group estimates as well, but they have historically been less accurate than the BLS (so less talked about)

But that's likely about to change now

JBS is already ahead of the game there on that one :/

From 2022

"Children are working dangerous jobs at JBS meat processing plants in Minnesota and Nebraska, hired illegally for overnight shifts and tasks that left a 13-year-old with caustic chemical burns, federal officials say."
Children illegally hired for graveyard shifts cleaning JBS meat plants, feds say
Food company's sanitation services provider is accused of employing kids for risky jobs, including a 13-year-old burned by chemicals.

And that's assuming they don't bend the definitions too, which they do all the time. For example, many supposed "free-range" chickens aren't really going outside like many imagine them

But it gives people an ability to ignore any of the ethical issues and such because it has that label on it
July 27, 2025 at 5:52 PM
Plus people in these discussions seem to conveniently forget that processed meats exist nor know what's actually considered a processed meat

Saw someone once claim they didn't want to switch to plant-based sausages because they were processed. Sausage itself is a processed meat!

Yes, wannabe authoritarians still need popular support to maintain their existence. If they lose enough of it, people within his administration will see an opportunity for themselves to get power and jump ship

Most authoritarian try to build popular support at their start for a reason

One important detail: NYC only has ranked choice for mayor in primaries and special elections. Not in general elections with existing laws
July 15, 2025 at 8:46 PM
That makes it harder but it can be overcome. For instance, Mamdani was outspent ~3:1 and won his primary. AOC was outspent ~10:1 in her 2018 primary upset

I assume this is either an attempt at trolling or bad faith arguing. In any case, I don't think continuing this conversation will help anything

Hope you have a change of heart in the future

Hmm this smells like an AI response. Your account uses a large amount of AI images as well

*Plant-based by default in NYC hospital meals, to clarify
July 8, 2025 at 8:20 PM
Things like this can easily be done around the country and world. Change the default or other small decision that most people won't actually care about but lead to decent changes
July 8, 2025 at 8:19 PM
Patients were mostly choosing the default plant-based option and were generally satisfied with it

It's also not super controversial to patients when it doesn't actually stop them from doing anything. Just changes the default
July 8, 2025 at 8:19 PM
In 2022, NYC rolled out plant-based meals by default and there was actually pretty minimal coverage on it. Hardly has impacted elections when most people didn't even hear it happened - and still has lead to a decent reduction in meat consumption
