The scene in the first episode where they're playing dnd is still one of the most painful things I've ever watched.

Journalism may be dead, but at least so are all of our other institutions.

And it's *really* embarrassing

Do you think the Gulf of Mexico should be called the Gulf of America because more of the coastline is in America, or do you want to use the familiar term for it?
November 27, 2025 at 12:24 PM
European can mean simultaneously people living in Europe, and descendants of people from Europe who live all over the world
November 27, 2025 at 12:21 PM
We also call it America without any confusion.
November 27, 2025 at 12:16 PM
German can also describe people in Austria. South African could theoretically refer to half the continent. Greek is just the roman word for a single Hellenic tribe. None of these terms are precise, except that we know what they mean.
November 27, 2025 at 12:14 PM
But we also try to avoid dropping the most important word when it's at the end of a phrase, but we do that with United States of America anyway.
November 27, 2025 at 12:10 PM
That's sorta what I'm getting at. We don't use precise language to describe people from different countries, we use familiar labels that mostly come from weird arbitrary sources. And one of those familiar words is American.
November 27, 2025 at 12:06 PM
We could call Mexico the United States. It would be a perfectly accurate description of the country. We just don't. And that's fine.
November 27, 2025 at 11:58 AM
Oh I do know this. I know we call Mexico Mexico, and I know we call America America. I just know that the fact we call them that is completely arbitrary, as are the names of every other country in the world
November 27, 2025 at 11:57 AM
Why is it not the United States?
November 27, 2025 at 11:51 AM
We do call Mexico the United Mexican States. Not in casual conversation, but that's the name of the country. And because 'United States' is a form of political organization, not just a name, Mexico *is* a United States, just as much as it is a country in the Americas. Both are equally true.

Polish just means 'people of the fields', but not every person who lives in a field is Polish.
November 27, 2025 at 11:42 AM
I also think it's silly to only use names for groups of people that are specific and accurate to them. Basically none of the etymology works out like that. British refers to people outside of Britain, European refers to people outside of Europe. Hungarian doesn't even mean Hungarian.
November 27, 2025 at 11:40 AM
Here's the thing that gets me about that though. Mexicans, say are 'Americans' in the literal sense, they live in the America's. They're also equally literally 'USians', because they live in the United Mexican States.

You're forgetting of course that the Northern Irish secretly control the world

A fair point, but I reject reality in favor of a funnier one I've come up with in my head.

What you don't know is that that 'dumbass' is actually just another hard working stripper spending the cash they got thrown to them.

They should make women that are freezing cold, for hot summer nights.
