Further, following the end of the Mongolian empire, Moscow developed as a separate nation mostly of its own accord but Ukraine was heavily influenced by Lithuania and Poland which made Ukraine mostly what it is today. So the languages are very similar sounding to a foreign ear.

Also, if you were curious, Russia and Ukraine were born from medieval Kyivan Rus. (Today’s geographical location would be Kyiv, Ukraine, but not to be confused that Russia was born out of Ukraine) it was the Mongols that fractured them.
