#62: Uma Musume: Pretty Derby - Beginning of a New Era (2024)

This is genuinely a really good movie about the rivalries, heartbreaks, and triumphs inherent to sports. Get you someone who'll piss you off and push you father.

Everyone says Uma Musume is horsegirl yuri, but it's actually F1 yaoi.

#61: The Man with the Iron Fists (2012) directed by RZA

The perfect send up to Hong Kong Kung fu movies that are Bad. It has some really badass action and choreography, but it draaaaaaags

rza can stay, quentin please leave.

#60: Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) written and directed by Jim Jarmusch

A surprisingly contemplative film that just manages to sell the coolness, tragedy, and mundanity of its protagonist navigating its world of gangsters.

oh shit, rza has a cameo

#59: Zootopia 2 (2025) directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard

Very funny that after its prequel discusses stereotypes, Zoo2opia discusses* environmental racism. Doubt it'll set the world on fire the way the prequel did, but focusing more on the leads' dynamic is fun enough

*it's a kid's movie

#58: Hellboy (2004) written and directed by Guillermo del Toro

is preddy good; John Myers is the annoying "normal guy to on-ramp viewers" that a bunch of adaptations use, but the themes of "accepting the monster" establish a good foundation for GDT's later wo–

wait, he directed Blade 2?

#57: DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS (2025) by Bad Bunny

I've been stewing on what to say about this, since it came out in January. "Lo Que Le Pasó a Hawaii" stuck with me for its discussion of the colonization of Hawaii, but this album sticks with me as a celebration of Latin music.

"We're still here."

#56: Angel's Egg (1985) written and directed by Mamoru Oshii

Saw this in 4K for the 40th anniversary; there's a deeply spiritual edge to this movie, but more than anything it was incredible to sit and take in this beautifully rendered world.

#55: Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc (2025) based on work by Tatsuki Fujimoto

"yeah im gonna make these teenagers turn into chainsaws and bombs eheheheh"
"OUGHHHH, THEY'RE JUST KIDS!!!! THIS SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENING TO THEM! THEY SHOULD BE IN SCHOOL!!!!"

#54: Frankenstein (2025) written and directed by Guillermo del Toro

This isn't a faithful adaptation of the book, but this is GDT bringing his entire philosophy and aesthetic to the work that inspired him to become filmmaker he is. Go in wanting to see a GDT movie first, and you'll be amazed.

#53: Stardust (2025) by Danny Brown

Danny Brown's interview about Wallsocket by underscores shows how much he loves making music, and that he, sober and in his 40s, can make music this interesting and in tune with "youth culture" shows how we can always keep growing.

#52: Porco Rosso (1992) directed by Hayao Miyazaki

I don't think it's my favorite Miyazaki, nor do I think it's the best, but I think I like it's tone and atmosphere the most. There's a sense of romanticism, however macho, tinged with melancholy to make it a cozy yet thought-provoking movie.

#50: Suspiria (1977) by Dario Argento

"A lot of strange, incredible, absurd events." This is peak giallo—incredible atmosphere, sound design, and vibes. Really good horror movie for people the more easily scared.

why was the first kill the most danganronpa thing I've seen this side of hope's peak

#49: Act II: The Father of Death (2009) by The Protomen

Definitely a step up production and storytelling wise, but I think the 80s inspiration overwhelms a lot of the grit that I really enjoyed in Act I.

For that, Act II is just, while Act I is based, but I see why they're both so beloved.

#48: The Protomen (Act I) (2005) by The Protomen

For my quibbles with the narrative, this rock opera thrives on inspirations. A bit rough production wise, but the grit gives it a lot of character. 00s Newgrounds went nuts for this.

#47: The Life of a Showgirl (2025) by Taylor Swift

It's worse Reputation with weirdly traditional, feminine domesticity undertones, idk what you want from me

#46: A Dark Song (2016) directed by Liam Gavin

Really solid occult horror flick with Gnostic theming. Saw it with friends; it makes for a good spooky movie night!

#45: The Stuff (1985) directed by Larry Cohen

When people talk fondly about shlocky horror movies, they're talking about flicks like this. Really strong chemistry between the leads makes for an entertaining watch with strong special effects. It's got the sauce.

#44: Bring Her Back (2025) directed by Danny and Michael Philippou

I liked Talk to Me (2022) well enough, but Jesus Christ this was bleak. Deeply upsetting film that'll stick with me for a while.

#43: Speed Racer (2008) written and directed by the Wachowskis

Didn't care for the chimp-based humor, but when it's on, it's *on*. Really sells the kineticism of animation in a live action format, and it's crazy how much movie is in the movie.

#41: GOLLIWOG (2025) by Billy Woods

I listened to this at about the same time as the clipping. and Backxwash albums earlier this year and it's definitely the most harrowing of that "horrorcore" trio. Billy Woods has a way with atmosphere that just fills you with a sense of despair.

#41: Dandadan S1 & S2 (2024-2025) produced by Science Saru

Really fun adaptation especially thanks to Science Saru's elevation. I think the "Will They, Won't They" drags at times, but the anime is a consistent treat for the eyes.

#40: Him (2025) directed by Justin Tipping

This has so many interesting ideas about football, race, ambition, masculinity, yet it just fails to cohere in the end. It feels like it needed 15 more minutes, but it is so close to being My Type Of Shit.

I'd still recommend checking it out tho

#39: Titan AE (2000) directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman

I wouldn't call it a story as much as a loss collection of sci-fi tropes, but it is very pretty to look at, even the 00s CGI. The use of pop-punk is very funny, and I can imagine this movie turning 9 year olds into lifelong scifi fans.

#38: STAR LINE (2025) by Chance the Rapper

This is missing some of the singles I really loved in the interim since The Big Day, but Chance clearly has the spark, his optimism gaining a political bite in the years. I must admit, "and we back (IGH!)"
