The “zi” sound doesn’t appear anywhere in the name “Xi Jinping,” though. If anything, I’d say the ease and frequency of x/z pinyin confusion among non-speakers of Mandarin underlines the point here—in English environment, cues that help ppl get foreign names “close enough“ w/o overthinking are good!

The Handmaiden (2016) might fit the bill if colonial period Korea is not too modern. Early 20th-century setting, 19th-century decaying aristocracy vibes. I kind of want to suggest Ran or Throne of Blood too but those might not be OTT gothic enough?

When I say this to students it’s often “I’m worried you might feel foolish for asking this question when you hear the answer, so I’m reassuring that you weren’t wrong to ask” (frequently b/c they’re not alone in needing the answer). Classroom use case might be different from the wider world, but.

If you mean Discovery, the guy that namechecks him does fairly quickly turn out to be a villain, so... (My household still ponders whether this means the character thinks Prime Elon is a hero because he's a fascist, or he has the wrong idea because Mirror Elon was actually a great humanitarian.)
