QUILL REMOVAL 101 (10/10)

Occasionally there are small quills we cannot get out. They usually work their way out and we can pull them later. When in doubt, consult a vet.

7️⃣ Cleanse effected area carefully and thoroughly. We spray with Vetericyn and monitor.

6️⃣ Give a lick of peanut butter and issue a comforting command in a firm, calm voice like “wait” and/or “good dog” then start pulling quills with caution and place in container. Give a recovery break as needed to all parties, then repeat.

5️⃣ Cover their eyes firmly and kindly without pushing any quills further in. You may be able to pull quills away from their line of vision without getting chomped if you can steady their head.

4️⃣ We grab a bunch of teaspoons and the peanut butter (no artificial sweeteners) to bribe/distract/reward.

3️⃣ Medicate your Weim if you have proper medication on hand. We have sedatives (an Rx) and have also used Benadryl (must follow dosing instructions - this is something I recommend having on hand for spicy sky raisins 🐝 anyways).

•Unbreakable, lightweight container for quills - ideally a small sandwich meat, cheese spread, yogurt or some resealable container you can throw away wholesale.

•Paper towels or clean clothes.
•Towels for floor. It will look like a blood bath.
•Quick access to warm water if needed.

•Bent nose jewelry pliers work best for pulling. These pliers are sturdy (for metal work) and are fine enough to get between clumps of quills relatively easily. Some people like curved jaw forceps, but we don’t like the locking mechanism when we are trying to move quickly.

Tools continued:
•A Gentle Leader - if it can be places without aggravating quill situation is very helpful to hold/have purchase on holding the face.

2️⃣ Gather 2-3 humans and tools:
•Two people is key, three people is ideal if you have to also hold the Weim in place firmly, but kindly.
•We use a kitchen hand towel/tea cloth to cover their eyes.

QUILL REMOVAL 101 (3/10)

1️⃣ Most Weims are in enough pain that if you approach them to pull quills they will absolutely snap at you - even the nicest dog can snap, so I advise gloves and a long-sleeved shirt at a minimum for all human helpers.

⛔️ Quills in eyes are an immediate vet visit. Eyes are always an emergency. (We have been fortunate, but we have been asked on friend-dogs and no none-vet should go near eyes.) 👀

⛔️ We look IN the mouth to see if this is within our ability level before starting. Quills in the mouth are an art form I do not recommend for someone without experience and a desire to get bitten. Mouth quills are a good reason to head for the vet. 👅

(4/4) Our six Weims consume over a 50 lb bag of food each week in addition to unlimited veggies - because they pillage the pig food bins. Unlike humans, dogs should never be given additional calcium during pregnancy. Instead we add whole cuts of meat (liver) to their diet. Puppies arrive mid-March!

(3/4) A funny sidenote, that is undoubtedly not scientific and more behavioral, is that our girls tend to come in inside and immediately ask for extra food within minutes of being bred. Listen humans, I am officially making puppies and need more food!

(2/4) Like people, fetal development in dogs is broken into three trimesters. Weeks 1 through 3, so the first 21 days, seem to be marked by increased food intake and more time asleep - for the girls not for us.

(3/3) And -yes- I know I don’t have to give in to her demands - but at this age all rules go out the window - if not sooner. This is 13.

(2/3) I did as commanded, because my lot in life is to serve our animals, and opened the door. The two youngest dogs ran outside and Zara promptly stole the *best* bed under the kitchen table. Infallible Weim logic strikes again.
