Finally, my theory for what the creature could be: a great blue heron. These five foot tall birds are common to the area and frequently live near the water. If you are familiar with the bird, they can be terrifying to come across. I wouldn’t even want to imagine what they look like at night…15/?

Another thing common in mines: headlamps. The versions from 1903 look a bit different headlamps today. Admittedly, there is no way this would produce the amount of light claimed by the witnesses, but it would produce a fair amount of light…14/?

According the national history museum, there are thousands of animals with natural bioluminescence. The most similar type to the reported creature would be the anglerfish pictured below. However, there have never been any reported birds with bioluminescence…7/?
