The real issue is discovery. Technically speaking email is a form of decentralized social media, you don't think of that way because there is no algorithmic feed. The feed is the hard bit from a bunch of directions.

No problem! It is possible, but tricky as you would have to synchronize all the nodes if you wanted a true "unified" experience, which battle increases the cost to the hosts. You could go with a true distribution model, like Lemmy does, but then you get into "which server to join" issues

You can, and many have, but the issue is a catch-22. A social media site needs to burn tons of cash to grow enough for it to be viable, then it needs to have moderation and such for an ad model to even cover costs.
People are used to free and hosting at scale ain't cheap.

I think what folks are missing is that "ai" is going to be another way to get revenue through default deals. This is 100% fund raising not a hard pivot. Just like default search I'm sure it will be easy to change or remove

I often wonder how much these stats are padded with non llm AI use cases. ML is different than llm, same with expert systema.
Much like "cloud" or "crypto", we are shoving a bunch of different things into one hype basket.
