I am forever amused that because I sort my books alphabetically by author, The Drowning Empire and The Burning Kingdoms are side by side. I am not allowed to buy anything by an author who would split them up.

(Also, vulture stomach acids are so strong their poop can be used as disinfectant.)

Today at work a little boy asked me where the panda bear was (in reference to the red panda, we don’t have a giant panda), only his annunciation made it sound like “candy bear”, and I propose that this now be used as an alternative name.

I love making maps! I made these all myself, so I'd want something a little artsier when I get published, but they still look pretty good. They are for #JustStabsWIP, #TheDragoneer, #ReyaWIP, and #BrokenHero (the latter two are shelved, but still nice maps).

A large peninsula, covered by the country Lorlaine, reaches away from Sancia toward the archipelago Alhanna. The countries Darouse, Periacha, and Garza surround Sancia to the north, west, and southwest. A digital fantasy map. It is very large and detailed, enough that many details cannot be made out at this magnification. There is a very large continent, dominated by the countries Cicandria and Jemna. Cicandria is connected to a subcontinent to the north by an isthmus, leading to Atiara. North of Jemna is the smaller continent Allowin. A digital fantasy map. The ocean is to the east. Bordering the ocean is the country Tempes Maris, and to the west is the country Victoria. Between them is the disputed zone. The countries are bordered by mountains to the north and west, while to the south is the River Nara. North of the mountains is the Realm of Winter.

Rin thinks the only person she can rely on is herself, so she pushes others away with snark and compulsive lying. Her knives are her comfort items, & she will always be distracted by a beautiful woman. She may not have much, but she's happy, because you can't lose what you don't have. #JustStabsWIP
The one in the dress—pale blue fabric down to her feet, the bodice cut in the shape of a waistcoat with white lace beneath—she was gods damned gorgeous. Rin grinned at her as they went by, twisting in her captors’ grips to keep her view. “Hey,” Rin said, jerking her chin. The woman in the dress glanced at Rin, in her cuffs, escorted by the coppers, her boots scuffed, and made a face. Her companion rolled her eyes and led her on, muttering something about scoundrels. Rin was brought back to her situation by a sharp tug on her arm. “Were you dropped as a baby?” the first copper asked. “No, why, were you?” “I wasn’t the one flirting while arrested.” “Frankly, I don’t see why the two should be mutually exclusive.” “Clearly.” A ridiculous attitude. It wasn’t Rin’s fault that a gorgeous woman had passed her under these circumstances. She had to take the opportunities she had. “Ah.” Rosebird looked at the knife, and then held out a hand. “Can I see?” Rin hesitated, having a sudden vision of Rosebird taking her knife and then tossing it in the water, but that sort of pettiness was Rin’s purview, not Rosebird’s. She switched her grip to the blade and placed the hilt in Rosebird’s palm. Rosebird hefted the knife and held it up for a closer look. “How many knives do you have?” “Fifty-two,” Rin said at once. Rosebird raised her eyebrows. “Actually, I’m not sure. I haven’t counted in a long time. And I wouldn’t tell if I did know, because then someone would know if they’d found all the knives on me or not.” Rosebird handed the knife back over. Rin took it and slipped it into its sheath under her coat. “I think I’ll just always assume there are more knives.” “A solid assumption.” Kerlin shook her head. She swayed gently with her horse. “You lie so much, I don’t want to believe you don’t want anything from the Source. But usually your bullshit is obvious, so I think you are telling the truth. Which is just more inexplicable.” That was maybe a little insulting? Rin wasn’t entirely sure. “You think it’s remarkable when I don’t lie?” “No, not on that. I just would have thought you’d have been the sort of person who wants everything.” “I’m the sort of person who lost everything,” Rin replied. “I’m a little hesitant to risk that again.” Rosebird was examining her face. Rin quickly looked down, at the knife in her hands. She hefted it by the hilt. “How often do you tell the truth?” Rosebird asked. Rin shrugged. “Just enough to keep it interesting.”

Rage coursed through Rin. She’d been set up, intentionally distracted, which wasn’t fair because Rin could never think straight around a beautiful woman.

I had a good time reading @cupiscent.bsky.social’s Notorious Sorcerer. It’s an exciting adventure with a cool magic system and a collection of unique characters.

1) She has more knives than she can count.
2) She WILL be distracted by a beautiful woman.
3) She is a compulsive liar.
4) She refuses to rely on or get close to other people.

All of these things are established in the first chapter.
“I’m sure this is all just a misunderstanding,” Rin said. “Nothing needs to be difficult. Can’t we work something out?” “Absolutely,” said the first copper, lifting Rin’s hopes. “In a court of law.” Rude. No one needed that kind of devastation. “Alright, that sounds fair, if I was responsible for this, which I’m obviously not.” The copper looked at Rin, with the bloody knife in her hand, and then down to the corpse, which had three stab wounds in the chest. She raised her eyes to Rin again, rapier swaying lightly in her hand. “I think you’re full of shit, you know that?” “Yeah, a lot of people say that.”

When I had my parents’ doggo a couple years ago while they were on a road trip to the Arctic Circle.
