In case anyone hasn't yet read this book: can confirm, it's incredible. Possibly my favourite KJC, although it may be in a death match with the other Will Darling series books, and the Green Man novel Spectred Isle, all of which are also chef's kiss.

(For the list of things that are batshit bonkers/make academics unwell, see also: mainstream academic publishing; the "tenure track".)

I did! I now do my research for an NGO in one of my research areas (information science). Getting EU funding is no joke, but everything is much less about crappy structures and dept / institutional politics, and a lot more about the actual work (which is what I care about).

HE is a shitshow for researchers, and pressure like this drives a lot of the poor behaviour I witnessed there. I hope a better research context is possible for you at some point soon ☹️

Yes, that and the edge demarcating where the stone wall meets the white floor. Such an intriguing picture!

Can't wait to read it! I know the contemporary Seven Dials area, but I was drawn there initially by its reputation as a complex and dangerous slum in writing of the Victorian period. I wonder if you identify any traces of the slum era in the modern period.

Who’s your favourite? I’m all about the Mongolians. Ichinojo was my favourite until The Departure, then my babe Terunofuji. Now I’m into Hoshoryu these days. I hope he does well and stays healthy this week. Enjoy Saturday!

My mistake entirely. And confirms that I spend far too much time thinking about Bertram when my mind should be on other things!

Wait, dash it. You were talking about Peter there and I was talking about Bertram. My apologies. I see now what you mean.

He's a lot taller than Peter – that's the one thing we do know. I suppose that the Drones has a portrait? (I wonder if Peter was also a Drones member. Even just ironically. 🤔)
