Not sure whether Trudeau dinner with Trump will lead to any short term benefits. But having a good personal rapport with any president, particularly this one, is very important and so Trudeau made a good move.

Something that’s rarely pointed out. Total defence spending of NATO countries collectively is about $1.4-trillion.
Total of rivals Russia, China, North Korea etc. collectively is not half that amount.
