反对政治正确者常以“感到不自由”为由反对这些改变，但往往忽略自己在既有权力结构中的既得地位。正如辩手Michelle Goldberg指出，政治正确不过是将经典自由主义理念（如言论自由、平等权利）扩展到所有人，而非少数特权群体。Stephen Fry所谓的“感到不能自由说话”，更多是对特权被挑战后的焦虑，而非真正的压制。真正需要反思的不是少数人要求尊重是否“过度”，而是为何这一点点尊重会引发主流群体如此不安。因此，所谓“反政治正确”的言论，多半是维护旧有权力结构的情绪性反击，不应被误认为是对自由的捍卫。
