Protesting for democracy in the U.S. can be empowering, but it's crucial to stay safe - especially if armed militia groups (e.g. Proud Boys, Oath Keepers) might be present. This guide provides practical tips on personal safety, de-escalation, legal rights, preparation, safe exit strategies, incident documentation, and staying informed. Each section is U.S.-specific and draws on advice from civil liberties organizations and experienced protest organizers. Go with a friend or a group and agree on a meet-up plan if separated. A buddy can watch your back, alert others if you're harmed or arrested, and help record incidents.
