This is an excerpt from the fine newsletter written by Heather Cox Richardson @hcrichardson.bsky.social about dictators giving impunity to the criminals they like.

It's true, but it's a bigger problem that the U.S. justice system gives impunity to the wealthy and powerful without dictators present.
Dictators also enforce loyalty by protecting those who have been found guilty of crimes in the nation's nonpartisan justice system. Last week Trump commuted the sentence of former representative George Santos (R-NY), ending his seven-year sentence for fraud with just three months served and removing his obligation to pay $373,749.97 to the victims of his crimes. Trump has pardoned or commuted the sentences of more than 1,600 people, far more than most presidents do in four years.

What is "plenary authority" anyway?

It's absolute power. Not subject to judicial review.

In the context of U.S. law, it often applies to powers granted to Congress or the President, particularly in areas like immigration and national security, where their decisions are typically not subject to judicial review.

In 2025, the Savvy Man asked, "Who could have seen INVASIVE CARP coming?" and chuckled with feigned chagrin. A flying carp smacked the Savvy Man in the face, and he thanked it for Reaching Across the Aisle.

A striped orange and white kitten and a striped gray and white kitten perch on two levels of a tall upholstered cat furniture thing, both looking off to the left. They're fucking cute and you know it. On the back of the couch next to the cat furniture is a blue (and white) knitted blanket I made which isn't on the back of the couch anymore because sweet orange boy Benny started chewing holes in it so now it's up high on a closet shelf. When they're older maybe it will get repaired.

Perhaps unfortunately, I'm pretty easy to google too. I do have better things to do with my time than participating in a pissing match on social media.

Also, in general it's not worth engaging with someone who isn't at least neutral on an issue I care (one cares) about.

Separating someone from a cult is very difficult. It's specialized work. But there are many people who are upset and want to act, or who would be if they knew more. Those are the people to connect with and take action with.

Got this text from Steve Schmidt, former GOP campaign leader who co-founded the Lincoln Project. He wants to raise $500k for vans with clergy and others who will film ICE raids.

People are already doing that with their phones.

Steve, maybe just show up and ask people what they need? Give to CHRLA!

This tall cat furniture has been underused for some years so the old cats have nothing to complain about.
